In December, Henry W. Longfellow received word his son had been severely wounded four days prior. He had been shot through the left shoulder with the bullet existing under his right shoulder blade. He missed being paralyzed by less than an inch.

Comfort and Joy
One of the celebrations of the Christmas season I attended was a Ladies Night of Music. Round tables of eight, elegantly decorated with red table cloths, pine bough center pieces and trays of goodies, filled the foyer of a large church. Women’s voices mingled into a blend of laughter and pleasant conversations, while the aroma of cinnamon and apples permeated the area. Several song sheets sat expectantly on each table. The four candles burned slowly. The ambiance was so soft, one could almost hear them talking. The first candle said, “I am peace. The world is full of anger and fighting.
