A Wall is a Wall

a wall is a wallMy husband spent his entire adult life building walls.  He was good at it.  He was a bricklayer, and the walls he built gave many houses their  firm foundation.  After pouring the footings, he squared the blocks.  He laid the corner stone.  Using a trowel to bond each block with cement, he stacked each course until it was complete.  Good tools and materials and are necessary for solid walls and a strong structure.

When our son-in-law built a backyard shed, he too had to make sure everything was square.  He cut the studs to a precise measurement and using a screw gun or his hammer, he secured the siding to the studs of the walls.  Everything must be measured and reinforced if he was to have a study shed.

But, can you imagine ~

Can you imagine trying to build a wall out of water?  Impossible!  That sounds as absurd as swatting a fly when there is a lion in the room!  Building a wall out of water?  Ridiculous!  That sounds as doable as chasing the wind with a butterfly net.  But, that’s exactly what God did!  He made walls out of water.  Twice!

The first time happened when the Lord rescued the Israelites from bondage in Egypt.  His only tools: a man and an east wind to accomplish the Herculean task, although He didn’t actually need either the man or the wind to accomplish the task.  Both the man, Moses, and the east wind obeyed the Lord’s command.  Moses had to stretch out his hands over the Red Sea, and all through the night, the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind.  The Egyptian army was in hot pursuit, and the terrified Israelites stood between the Red Sea and their enemy with what looked like an impossible situation and certain death.

But then, the  waters divided, and the awe-struck Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and a wall on their left.  (Exodus 14:16,21-22)

A Wall is a Wall ~

Can you picture walking through walls of water that tower over you with no visible means of holding them back?  But that is exactly what happened – the Israelites crossed the Red Sea on dry ground.  When safely on the other side, the walls of water came crashing down killing the pursuing Egyptian army.

The other time the Lord God made walls of water occurred when the Lord again delivered the Israelites.  This time, God stopped up the Jordan River – while it was in its flood stage!  His only tools?  The obedience of priests.

Joshua 3:13 describes the scene.  “And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the Lord – the Lord  of all the earth – set foot in the Jordan, its waters downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap – like a wall.”  The Israelites crossed over on dry ground.

A wall is a wall whether man builds it with materials, tools, and hard work or the Lord creates a wall out of water.  For man, it is a job; for the Lord, He did a miracle.
