God said, “This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him.”
So, when did God say this and why, and who is His Son?
God’s voice, like the sound of thunder, came out of a cloud the day His Son was transfigured on a high mountain in the presence of Peter, James and John. Moses and Elijah, representing the Law and the Prophets, also appeared with God’s Son. The reason God spoke these words of Jesus Christ is because they are of utmost importance to us!
Well then, what did Jesus say that was important enough for the Heavenly Father to make such a command to “listen to Him?”
For starters, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
Hmmm. That in itself is extremely significant and spoken with all authority of heaven, and who could dispute absolute truth spoken by God’s only begotten Son? But what else did Jesus say the reason we should listen to Him?
How about this statement by Jesus: “I go to prepare a place for you, and I will come again and receive you to Myself that where I am, there you may be also.”
Okay, that’s an amazing statement that gives added dimension to why we should listen to God’s Son! And besides, these words also pertain to us personally.
What other profound words did Jesus say that would be of such significance that we should listen to Him?
How about the time Jesus was speaking to unbelieving Jews when He said, “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life, and it is these that bear witness of Me; yet you do not come to Me that you may have eternal life.”
How astonishing is that! Someone would read, and even study, the Bible and still choose not to come to Jesus Christ and receive eternal life!
Jesus also said, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” That’s a promise we can trust since God does not lie. How could He – He’s God.
How about this statement; “I came that you may have life and have it abundantly.” Who but God could give us life, and that we may have it abundantly? Not one human being has the power, the authority, or the capability to give life and give it abundantly!
And then there are these words: “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life.” We believe. He gives eternal life. Incredibly simple, yet astonishingly profound!
Ah! It makes total sense. Jesus came from heaven to reveal the mystery of heaven which is that by believing in Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son, we have eternal life. Afterall, there is no other name under heaven given to man that we may be saved except the name of Jesus. No wonder God said, “This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him.”
