This was sent to me by my daughter, “Monday was the most expensive holiday on the calendar. Every hot dog, every burger, every spin around the lake, or drink with friends and family, is a debt purchased by others. This is in honor of those who paid in life and blood; whose moms will never see them again, whose dads weep in private, whose wives raise children alone, and whose kids only remember them from pictures. This isn’t simply a day off. This is a day to remember that others paid for every free breath you ever get to take. Freedom.”
LaDawn also sent me this excerpt from the St. Francis School District newsletter, “Memorial Day is a time to reflect, pay tribute, and be proud of the bravery of those who gave their lives in the line of duty. But it doesn’t have to be just one day out of the year. On June 27th, a “Remember Them Memorial Dedication” ceremony is planned for four Saint Francis high school graduates who lost their lives serving our country.”
I do not personally know any of those who died in battle, but I still think it is good to remember the many heroes who died for many and to honor them for their selfless acts of bravery against the enemy. But wars will continue till the end of time, and there will be more heroes and more who will benefit from their bravery.
Many wars and much bloodshed later after many wars, Paul wrote in 1Corinthians 11:23- 25 “For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
Paul is speaking of the only begotten Son of God and Son of Man, namely Jesus. The One who died for all.
Jesus too was sent on a mission – from heaven to a war-torn and war-weary world. But His battle was not against the visible enemy; His was against the unseen enemy. Who is the unseen enemy? It is Satan, the personification of all evil, and his demons. One Man willingly shed His blood; He gave His life in order that the whole world would benefit if have faith.
We honor the war heroes who died, and we worship the Savior who died and was raised again in victory over Satan, sin, and death. Because Christ Jesus defeated sin and death, He has the authority to offer the gift of eternal life to all who believe in the name of Christ Jesus.
I do know Jesus personally, and I know it is good and right to worship Him, honor Him, to glorify Him, and to remember Him. I praise Him for He is my Lord and Savior, and I am confident of receiving His gift eternal life. May you have that assurance as well.
