God’s Rest

The Israelites’ journey from slavery in Egypt to the freedom in the Promised Land of Canaan is used as a metaphor for the Christian journey from sin to salvation. The author of Hebrews connects the spiritual rest to faith in Jesus Christ meaning that entering God’s rest is about trusting in Jesus and living in obedience to Him while on earth.

My mountaintop experience was quiet, personal, whereas Israel’s journey involved the entire nation in a stunning display of His power. In His extravagant and inexhaustible resources, God tailers what He knows is needed for each specific task at hand – whether it is physical deliverance from slavery or spiritual deliverance from sin.

First a mighty wind tore the mountains apart and shattered rocks, but the Lord was not in the wind. Then there was a powerful earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. Then came a blazing fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire came a gentle whisper.
