Our cabinet maker was scheduled to stop over to the house we were building to pick up the kitchen cabinet stain. I could not decide which of three scenarios to pick, so I meticulously arranged them into three groups: light wood stain cabinets with medium oak floors; dark mahogany-like cabinets with light hardwood floors; or dark stain cabinets with medium floors. I had paint chips and counter top samples for each of the color schemes.
“Tell me which combination strikes you the best,” I said as he glanced over my array of colors. He looked serious.
“I have to tell you something,” he said quietly.
What. Hickory cabinets instead of oak? Tile floors instead of hardwood? Granite counter tops instead of laminate? “What?” I asked.
“I’m color-blind.”
This situation, lighthearted as it may be, reminded me of a much more serious scene recorded in the book of Revelation that causes one to catch her breath. The Angel of the Lord is speaking to the church of Laodicea when He said, “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold or hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm – neither hot or cold – I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that your are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.”
They were blind to their desperate situation.
This kind of blindness means to be spiritually blind so one cannot see the Light of the Gospel – namely that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him.
Being color blind may be annoying to the person who cannot distinguish colors, but it is only temporary. Being spiritually blind may not even be recognized by one who is spiritually blind, but the consequences are forever and ever. Ask the Lord for eyes to see, ears to hear, and a heart to believe.
Do you see the Light?
