Last night I had a dream that my husband and I, along with one of our daughters and her husband, were sitting in the warm sun on our deck. Our daughter pulled out a pack of cigarettes and lit one. I was shocked! I stared at her and asked, “What are you thinking? Don’t you know the coronavirus attacks the lungs?” She shrugged, and I woke up. That was just a dream, but it got me wondering, What are you thinking during this season of chaos and darkness?
Are you thinking in survival mode? Stocking up on essentials? Sewing masks for the front line workers? Snap chat? ZOOM meetings? How do I adjust to a world engulfed in pestilence? How do I overcome feeling isolated? We own our thoughts whether we are thinking practically, optimistically or sacrificially. Our thoughts can dart to the dark recesses of our mind to the optimistic places and back to the dark corners where fear hides and anxiety lurks. It doesn’t have to be that way.
What are we to do?
What do you think the Lord God Almighty might have to say? What does the Lord ask us to do during this season of trial? Let’s find out. In order to do that, however, we must go back to Psalms in the Old Testament when King David looked up in awe at the night sky that held the splendors of creation. If you were there alongside David that night, would you have quietly asked, “What are you thinking?” Would you have been surprised at David’s response when he praised God with these words “O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:3) Would you have joined with David as he worshiped its Creator for the work of His fingers?
Even when surrounded by impossible circumstances like trying to contain an invisible enemy, the believer can proclaim, “The Lord is on my side. I will not fear. (Psalm 118:6) Also, in Psalm 118:28 where David worships God with these words, “You are my God, and I will praise You; You are my God, I will exalt You.”
We are to praise and worship God – the main reason for which we were created. By the way, we are to praise and worship God not just in good times, but in the chaotic and dark times, too. Times and seasons may change, but God does not ever change. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
God created the vast universes with their billions of stars by the work of His fingers; but it took ALL of God to save us from our sins. For those who may not know Jesus as Lord and Savior, my prayer for you is that your eyes would be opened now to see, your ears to hear, your mind to understand, and your heart to believe, because those who die rejecting Jesus die in unbelief and unforgiveness, and will spend all of eternity paying for their sins themselves and will never pay for them all.
