Continued from July 12 post.
“Well, what do you think it means?” Merci asked, wide-eyed.
“I’m certain that what Jesus meant is that He is the One who gives eternal life. My grandmother said once that not being thirsty means not being thirsty spiritually. I think it means that somehow if we have faith, we won’t be thirsty spiritually – not physically.”
“Hmm,” Merci said, thoughtfully.
Grace flipped through a few more pages and stopped at an underlined paragraph. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved,” she read, aloud.
Merci nodded slowly. “So, if we believe in Jesus, He will give us eternal life?”
Grace nodded. “Pretty sure what we’ve been searching for is within us – in our hearts. I remember my grandmother talking about that. It all makes sense – you and I meeting, the books we’ve found…”
“And the pitcher of water and the bread and fruit set up as though someone was expecting us,” Merci finished Grace’s sentence.
“Let me see the big book,” Merci said, eyes wide and hand extended. She saw a ribbon attached to a bookmark and opened the book. “It says ‘The Gospel of John. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.'” She closed the book and held it to her chest. She looked intently at Grace.
“My grandmother explained that Jesus is the Word, but as a teenager, I guess I just wasn’t interested.”
“I want to meet Jesus!”
“I think my grandmother introduced me to Him, but I didn’t really pay much attention. Until now, that is.”
“Let’s sit by the well and read more,” Merci suggested.
Grace smiled. ” Marvelous idea!”
