“I will ascend into heaven. I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. I will sit on the mount of the congregation. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds. I will be like the Most High.”
These lofty and arrogant words of self-exaltation come from the heart of Lucifer. Lucifer was the most beautiful and highest ranking of the created angelic beings in the heavens. He held a special place of prominence before the throne of God. But, he wanted more!
Lucifer wanted to be grander than God and have more glory. He wanted to be above the angelic creatures of heaven. He wanted to be over and above God – to surpass the Most High. Lucifer wanted to rule the universe!
Lucifer stirred up one third of the angel hosts of heaven to rebel against God. When this revolt took place, Lucifer and his angels were banished from heaven and thrown to the earth. After Lucifer’s rebellion against God, God changed his name from Lucifer to Satan which means ‘adversary.’ This is the name most commonly used when referring to the devil.
Satan was enraged. His great wrath against God was directed to God’s epitome of His creation – namely human beings. He turned his attack on the human race. As ruler of the domain of darkness, he came with a vengeance to kill and to destroy all of mankind. Believers and unbelievers alike were in his crosshairs.
But God! But God had a plan from eternity past. God in His great grace and mercy, sent His only Son who was begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father by whom all things were made, who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and became man. His name? Jesus. His mission? To redeem mankind – to rescue humanity from the great adversary, to pay the penalty for the sins for all people for all time, once for all – the righteous for the unrighteous.
Jesus came from the kingdom of light to give life, abundant life, to all who believe in His name. Why would He do this? It is a demonstration of His everlasting love for man. Jesus is the visible form of the invisible God. He is God in the flesh. He is love. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through Him.
What great ambition Satan had hoped to attain, God did something even greater – He created man in His own image. That is something Satan was not, nor could not, ever have the privilege of nor the intimacy with God that man has been given.
Satan’s goal was to exalt himself above God; Jesus’ mission was to be obedient to God and to exalt Him. Therefore, we are to love God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all mind and with all our strength.
If we stand firm in our faith, Satan, our great adversary, will flee from us. Stay focused on who Jesus is. Do not fear – God is in control.
