What is your deepest desire? What do you long for at the core of your being?
Do you covet a marriage that is solid and makes you happy? To be loved unconditionally? Or finding the job that you love to do that offers a great salary and full benefits? What about good health with the vitality of youth? Do you desire a body that is perfect in shape?
What if your loved ones did not have difficulties to battle? Or what if your aging parents didn’t have to suffer or be alone?
Do you yearn for a world without crime or a government without corruption? Would you relish peace without fear, anxiety, guilt, shame or dread? Wouldn’t it be great if our world were ruled by love and not hate and greed?
To have such noble desires is not necessarily a bad thing – unless they consume a person, and these desires become the motivation to try to achieve that all-important goal in life. When we let worldly desires drive us, we scatter our energy to the wind. Chasing after perfection in a fallen world would be like trying to swat a gnat when there is a lion in the room ready to pounce.
We live in a fallen world
Solomon, also known as The Preacher and author of Ecclesiastes, says this about chasing after our deepest desires with a worldly view: “Vanities of vanities. All is vanity.” Ecclesiastes 1:2
Here’s wisdom that may re-direct our deepest desires away from the vanity of this world to the surety of God’s eternal kingdom. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil. This will bring health to your body and strength to your bones. (Proverbs 3:5-7)
Solomon came to this conclusion on man’s search for meaning to life, “Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all. ”
God has placed eternity in our heats. A search for the perfect life on earth will only leave us empty-handed, because our souls yearn for something that will last. We were created to worship God for His glory and for our joy. Jesus said that He came that we might have life and have it abundantly. That means to have unshakable joy in a right relationship with God that will last for all eternity. Ought we not to seek the heart of God and let that become our deepest desire? God will not reject any who call upon the name of the Lord. In fact, God loves us with an everlasting love. He calls us to come to Him.
